A dumping citation that topped $1,000, an out-of-state arrest in a car theft and a drunken-driving charge after a Middletown Avenue crash led recent North Haven police activity.
All charges are allegations. Anyone charged is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
Dumping on Valley Service Road
North Haven police cited a 61-year-old driver more than $1,000 after officers found illegal dumping on Valley Service Road, the department said on its Facebook page in mid-September, as Patch reported Sept. 17.
Arrest in April car theft
Police arrested Marco Corpening, 29, of New Jersey, in connection with a car theft at a Washington Avenue gas station on April 9, WFSB reported Sept. 5. A second suspect was awaiting extradition, according to the report.
Gas station thefts often happen when a driver leaves a car running while paying or pumping. Police routinely urge drivers to take their keys with them, even for a minute.
DUI charge after Middletown Avenue crash
A Sept. 5 crash near 22 Middletown Ave. at Bernhard Road led to charges against Rafael Cruz, 37, of Meriden. He was charged with driving under the influence and assault with a motor vehicle, and held on $50,000 bond, WFSB reported.
Also on the department’s radar
Street takeovers and illegal dirt bikes and ATVs remain priorities. In its most recent annual report to the town, the department said detectives made about half a dozen arrests after a reckless street takeover in the Universal Drive area, and that officers take part in a regional ATV task force.
The department and the town are also pursuing local ordinances aimed at street takeovers and ATVs, to add enforcement options and consequences for offenders.
About the department
The North Haven Police Department was established March 8, 1943, and is headquartered at 8 Linsley St. The department handles nearly 30,000 calls for service a year, according to the town’s most recent annual report.
