How North Haven’s schools placed

Green Acres also did well on individual subjects. U.S. News ranks it No. 40 (tied) in Connecticut for elementary math and No. 49 for reading.

How the rankings work

U.S. News says this year’s edition ranks about 46,000 public elementary schools and more than 24,000 middle schools nationwide, comparing each against others in its state. The scores are built mostly on state math and reading test results. The 2027 edition uses state data at every proficiency level, not just the share of students who pass.

“By incorporating direct state data across all proficiency levels, the 2027 rankings offer a richer, more complete picture of how elementary and middle schools are driving student growth,” Eric Brooks, U.S. News director of education data analysis, said in the release.

Rankings are based on test data, not the things parents often care most about: teachers, school culture and what happens in the classroom every day. Still, two North Haven elementary schools in the state’s top 50 is a nice note for local families and staff.
