Drivers who speed past two North Haven schools will soon get a ticket in the mail.

The town is installing six automated speed cameras in school zones around North Haven Middle School and Ridge Road Elementary School. The Connecticut Department of Transportation approved North Haven’s plan on July 29.

Where the cameras go

According to the town’s automated traffic enforcement page, the devices will cover:

  • North Haven Middle School: Bailey Road, from Maple Avenue to Elm Street.
  • Ridge Road Elementary: Ridge Road, from Buell Street to Skiff Street.
  • Ridge Road Elementary: Hartford Turnpike, from Oliver Drive to Skiff Street.

The cameras run 24 hours a day, seven days a week, not just during school hours. They are triggered when a driver is going 11 mph or more over the posted limit.

Why these streets

The numbers behind the decision are hard to ignore. A five-day speed study recorded more than 12,000 speeding vehicles in the zones, roughly 2,450 a day, WFSB reported Sept. 17. The fastest driver clocked was going more than 65 mph.

What it will cost

  • First violation: $50 fine plus a $15 fee, $65 total.
  • Later violations: $75 fine plus a $15 fee, $90 total.

The tickets carry no license points. Vehicle owners have 10 days to request a hearing if they want to contest a violation.

When tickets start

The program opens with a 30-day warning period, when violators get notices instead of fines. Fines are expected to begin in December 2026, Patch reported Sept. 14, citing the police department.

The town’s vendor is Altumint. Under the program’s rules, data is deleted within 30 days after a violation is resolved.

The bigger picture

Connecticut lawmakers cleared the way for towns to use speed and red-light cameras in 2023, as long as they get a CTDOT-approved plan first. A number of Connecticut towns have since launched programs or are working on plans.
